Notes from the garden

We have passed the height of summer and now we are rolling steadily downhill towards winter.  Still, the sun is hot and the bees and butterflies continue to drink nectar from the remaining flowers.  The wasps however are confused by the scent of merlot in my glass.

Wasps!

With fewer insects to eat,

They focus on the picnic.

White, cotton wool clouds move slowly across the sky as I watch the oak tree lift its branches for the breeze.

Clouds move by,

As a breeze stirs the trees;

Woodpigeons call.

With only a little wind, the atmosphere is peaceful.  The current troubles of humanity and the world seem far away, diminished, allowing the sounds from around the garden to soothe me.

Woodpigeons calling, sparrows cheeping, robins singing, martins twittering, starlings whistling, wrens scolding!

There are so many birds singing in the hedgerows, and from the garden itself, there is a quiet chorus of insects as they move among the flowers.

Like the clouds, the changing season drifts by, barely noticed.

  1. “…confused by the scent of merlot…” ha I’ve never heard that in a sentence, before. I’ll have to use that with Marilyn. ha Wow, two hokku in one post…I didn’t know I could get so excited by poems. Thanks for the transplants! They’re excellent, Frax-sama!

  2. Nature out there is still beautiful and fragrant. I had a wasp coming for my tea today 🙂 I’m really enjoying the warmth still, no I really love it! Your post is beautifully written.

    1. I only dislike wasps when they build a nest right by the back door! Otherwise, they are very welcome in my garden. Thank you for visiting here 💐💖💝🙋‍♂️

  3. I LOVE 💗 the changing season!!!
I can feel more amazingly of the nature😍🌼💕
Thanks for sharing your surroundings, enjoy the very last summer and Autumn arriving time 😊🐝🌾🍃🍂🍁🍄🌙

    1. Thank you for your lovely comments. I try to follow the seasons with my writing, soon it will be the autumn equinox and there will be another shift in the earth’s energies. Mahalo 💐💖🐟🙋‍♂️

    1. Goodness, Lisa! There are times when I’m writing it feels like it will never come together and even if I publish it, like this page, I’m never sure it’s complete! Thank you, dear friend, for your lovely encouraging words. 💐💐🤗🙋‍♂️

    1. Dear Micah, it doesn’t last long. Already the evenings feel cooler and it has been raining more often, a soft rain at the minute! We’re already checking our wardrobe for winter clothes, well my wife is! 😂 We’ve also had a couple of casseroles recently; that should tell you something about living in northern climes! Keep well. Say Hi to Marcus 🙋‍♂️

  4. The early autumn has a very special atmosphere. Ashley, you found exactly the right words to describe this mood. Yes, the sun is still warm, but it is closer to the horizon and the shadows have been longer.
    Beautifully written.
Ashley, I wish you all the best! ❤️

      1. Same here and same to you! It’s been a beautiful sunny October day, have been enjoying the day on the balcony … all too soon it will be rainy and foggy again, which also has its charms … looking forward to your next pics and posts!

  5. October’s gloom when I catch up with this, and already looking back on September with fondness. It seems to have been a year for wasps.

    1. Michael, thank you for your comments. I didn’t see many more wasps than usual here but then we seem to be losing so many insects. I record butterflies in the garden and certainly, there have been fewer of them this year! Thank you for your visit here. 🙋‍♂️

  6. I am not sure your posts have appeared in my reader, so definitely missed this one. September seems a long time ago now. Lots of Autumn leaves around. Still a few insects buzzing around the Ivy flowers.

    1. You’ll just have to press that “follow” icon again 🤣 but it does seem a long time ago! The season is changing slowly and the little garden birds are constantly at the feeders! The feeders need refilling more quickly than usual and today it is very definitely colder, with a real chill in the air! Lovely to hear from you 😊🙋‍♂️

  7. Sometimes I stare at the clouds. They’re so beautiful with the light and the grey around. It seems that this vision would be a wonderful conversation with God. And all that light seems a word of God for me. I look at the sky, sitten with my dog besides of me, and wonder why we all see the same sky and we’re so different inside. Ithink all people should be united. No religion, no politic, no states, only peace and serenity. Love for you 🌹🌺💐🌸🌼🌻

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment and for visiting my blog! Yes, we are all connected in every way. The sky, the sea and of course the earth beneath our feet. It is wonderful to realise that we are all made from the same things, stardust 💐🎋💖🥰🙋‍♂️
