Autumn Equinox

Here in the northern hemisphere it is that time when both night and day are of equal length and from here on daylight reduces and the nights become longer.  It’s a time for preparing for the colder months but it is also an opportunity to plan for the months beyond the winter.

Planting bulbs,

As the darkness grows –

Flowers for spring.

  1. Ooh, yes! What fun to be planting bulbs. I’m so glad to be reading this. I’m a keen gardener and definitely want to get some bulbs to plant. My internal seasonal cycle is not in autumn mode yet. I probably would have forgotten to plant them this year. Enjoy autumn 🙋‍♀️🍁🍂🍁

  2. Very nice poem, Fraxinus! I’m not an expert, but it sounds like a daoku to me. Beautiful! The ancient people knew to do what you are doing on this mid-autumn day. They stored as much food as possible and knew to prepare for the spring, and some, who could write, got ready their writing materials, preparing to write hokku throughout the cold and dark winter days, like my wildling friend, 灰の木の葉 !

    1. It is always good to see snowdrops but this time I’m trying some small iris and am looking forward to seeing their colour in the garden. 🌹🙋‍♂️

      1. I’ve got a packet of those to plant too. I’ve grown them before, Ashley, and they’re beautiful. Yes, it’s always good to see the snowdrops arrive at the end of winter. My absolute favourites are tulips.

    1. Hi Sue! They are narcissus, Tete Boucle. they only grow to about 6″ and will be a delight to see. I’m also trying some little Iris also only 6″ tall. Colour for the spring! 🌹🙋‍♂️

    1. Hi Mark, I’ve been that busy, I missed your comment! Sorry. Will you plant bulbs for next year? I’ve even potted up some garlic but they won’t be ready until next summer at the earliest. (PS. I visited the farmer I mentioned earlier and may yet have a hokku. I could be spinning a yarn though 😉🤣

      1. Hi Ashley, we haven’t planted bulbs in couple years since the skunks dug them up in under 5 days. (I think it was skunks). Very cool you were able connect with the farm. I have tried spinning yarn before and I was amazed at how much more skill it took than I thought.

    1. Dear Lisa, bulbs are relatively easy and simple to grow. However, once planted you have to be patient; it will be a few months before they show themselves but what delight they will bring then! You must try some! Thank you, for your lovely comment about my verse; that brings me happiness as you’ve read it exactly as I intended. Go on! Plant some bulbs! 🌹😊🙋‍♂️
