Autumn Equinox 2023

20230921_114833

Whilst the ivy is still flowering and attracting bees, also the occasional butterfly, the Nerine bulbs have come into bloom, just in time for the autumn equinox.

Still there are flowers,
As the daylight fades --
Spider lilies.

I have a made a note in my diary to find more of these amazing blooms to plant in my little garden for next year.Β  Also I need to add more Asters like this compact variety.

I’ve just read that the autumn equinox is considered to be the doorway to winter, a time to let go of the past and move forward.Β  So, for today and the next few weeks, let us all enjoy the beauty and colours of the remaining flowers in our gardens.

Happy Autumn Equinox.

  1. What beautiful flowers! Happy Autumn Equinox to you! I think we have some native Asters here that I should consider planting as well. I was so busy over the last few years putting in the “structure” of trees and shrubs that I’m only now starting to expand my understanding of perennials and non-woody plants in the landscape.

    1. Hi Melanie, thanks for your visit here. Yes, Asters are great for autumn colour & of course to help the pollinators. πŸŒΉπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

  2. Happy Autumnal Equinox, my dear friend. Indeed, a time to let go of the past and move forward, without however letting the moments pass unnoticed! πŸ˜‰ Beautiful haiku and photos!

  3. Those Nerine flowers are beautiful, Ash! And I love your hokku! I enjoy anticipating what flowers will bloom during the year. Happy Equinox, my hokku brother!

    1. Happy Equinox, dear hokku brother! Nerines originally came from South Africa but they seem to be happy enough here in northern latitudes, flowering in autumn. Thanks for your visit. Enjoy what’s left of the weekend. πŸ˜ŠπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

    1. Hi Ute, as the skies grow grey I’m already thinking about what I’d like to have in the garden next autumn! More Nerines & definitely more Asters. We must look after our pollinators & we must keep our own eyes filled with colour. πŸŒΉπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

  4. I love that… Autumn is the door way to winter and letting go of the past for a new future… Such a great practice. And I like the idea of growing plants that flower later. πŸŒΈπŸ‘ŒπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

    1. Dear Morag, I love to see flowers late into the year especially if they help pollinators. The Spider Lily (Nerine) is originally from South Africa (19th C) but they seem to be happy enough in these northern latitudes. I must find more to plant. πŸŒΉπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

      1. That’s amazing, I thought I recognized it. I feel like a complete novice when it comes to plants in the UK. Happy plant hunting. πŸ‚πŸπŸŒΈπŸπŸ‚πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

  5. Lovely Aster blooms! I agree, Ashley, if autumn comes, can winter be far behind! Happy Autumn Equinox πŸŒΉπŸŒ»πŸ™

    1. Bridgette, I’m surprised the Nerines grow here as they originated in south Africa! But it looks like they are happy enough here! πŸŒΉπŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

  6. I love this time of year. The late blooms, the turning leaves, the fallen leaves, the angled sun and its shadows. Your flowers are beautiful!
