Summer’s End

groomsport 1

This is the little harbour of Groomsport on the southern shore of Belfast Lough. My photograph was taken looking northeast across the North Channel towards Galloway in Scotland.

As a child I remember wonderful summer holidays in Groomsport watching the boats in the harbour.  There is a sandy beach on the other side of the harbour wall on the right of this picture.  From this recent visit, the idea for my verse took root.

Excited children,
Splashing on the seashore;
Holidays almost over!

On another day, at a different place and another time:

Seabird families,
Circling off the cliffs;
Summer's end!

Soon it will be the start of a new month and with it a change in the Earth’s cycle of celebration: Lammas / Lughnasadh.  I will open a new chapter in my seasonal journal as I look towards the Autumn equinox in September, and the end of the Celtic year in October.

Wishing you well.

Ashley

  1. What lovely sunny photos, and wonderful childhood memories of playing on the beach. Happiness! Enjoy the last of your summer days and may you cross over to a new season: a bright and colourful autumn. We are still very cold here and I am looking forward to the warmer spring months here. 🍁🥀🍁🥀🍁

    1. I forgot to say that my father used to go on camping holidays along the coast of Scotland at Stranraer and on a good day they could see the northern tip of Ireland.

      1. Indeed, we have made that crossing between Northern Ireland and Scotland many times into Stranraer or Cairnryan from Larne. It is only a 2-hour ferry ride but the channel can be rough at times. Galloway and Ayrshire have some lovely scenery and the people there have great connections with Northern Ireland. 💐🙋‍♂️

    2. Dear Ashley,

      I concur with Morag Noffke. Those are very lovely photos of “the little harbour of Groomsport on the southern shore of Belfast Lough … looking northeast across the North Channel towards Galloway in Scotland.” Thank you.

      Moreover, I appreciate your commenting on my newly published post entitled “❄ ❅ ❆ Snowflakes, Tell Me Why You Are…”

      Please be informed that I have already responded to your comment with a highly bespoke comment and look forward to your reply there.

      Before autumn arrives, I would like to wish both you and Morag all the best in the final month of summer as follows:

  2. Hey Fraxinus-sama,
    I enjoyed this end-of-summer haibun with the great photos! That’s a beautiful area, Ash! Looks like I have two transplants to display in our Garden. Thanks, my friend.

    1. I look forward to seeing them in the Hokku Garden. I hope you’ve been keeping up with the weeding and watering! 😂😉🙋‍♂️

  3. Hello from Vancouver. A beautiful way to begin my day. Our travel may have been put on hold (we were to head over to your side of the world before Covid19) but I love traveling with you.

    1. I hear today that as long as US and EU travellers have had their 2 vaccinations the doors are open again, but please check from your side! 💐🙋‍♂️

      1. We still have the Covid19 Global travel advisory for Canada “Avoid non-essential travel outside Canada until further notice.” But progress is being made!
